Research

Baron, S., 2014. Exploring the patient journey: a collaborative approach to patient-centred improvement in healthcare. Doctorate Thesis (Doctorate). Bournemouth University

Dr Baron's research focuses on simulation-based education and creating realistic, engaging learning experiences for nursing students that are developed with people who have direct experience of health and care. This includes patients, carers, students, and practitioners. Through this collaborative approach, her work helps students build confidence, empathy, and professional skills that are rooted in real-life care.

Sue is involved in a range of national and international research projects, including:

A UK–Canada study exploring how virtual clinical environments affect nursing students’ confidence and accuracy when calculating medication doses (due to be presented at a 2025 international conference).

A co-designed digital resource, created with students, nurses and academic colleagues, to help healthcare students prepare for their first experience of a patient’s death in clinical practice.

An international project investigating the impact of simulation on student recognition and response to rapidly deteriorating patients (published in Nurse Education Today, 2022).

The Empathic Care of a Person with Cerebral Palsy (CP)—an interactive simulation tool based on lived experience, co-created with Helen, a person with CP and complex communication needs, and Emma a final year nursing student, now used in nursing education and included as an open access resource in the Virtual Empathy Museum's Simulation Room developed by the University of Technology Sydney .

Co-authorship of Snapshots of Simulation (2018), which showcases creative, low-cost teaching methods used by health educators around the world...

Palliative and end of life care; enhancing education and practice by enabling authentic, transformative learning from service user and provider experiences.

Dr. Sue Baron’s research is grounded in understanding and valuing the lived experiences of people who use and provide health and care services. Her work emphasises the importance of listening to and involving service users, carers, and healthcare professionals in the design, delivery, and evaluation of care and education. This approach supports the development of fair, compassionate, and learning-focused cultures in healthcare—moving away from blame and towards meaningful, sustainable improvement.

Sue’s PhD study, Exploring the Patient Journey: A Collaborative, Person-Centred and Evidence-Based Approach to Improvement in Health Care, demonstrated the transformative potential of co-producing improvement work with those who experience and deliver care. Her research shows that involving people directly in service reviews or staff education leads to more effective, person-centred, and lasting change.

She has contributed to and led a number of collaborative and impact-driven projects, including:

Supporting a Wellbeing of Women grant application (with Visiting Professor Sam Rowlands and Professor Edwin van Teijlingen) for an action research study exploring women’s and staff experiences of early termination of pregnancy, to inform safe, respectful, and evidence-based service improvement.

Co-supervising a Master’s research project investigating university students' perceptions of abortion, completed in 2018.

Leading three funded co-creation film projects with final-year students from the Faculty of Media and Communication...
